FAQ

What is Direct Primary Care (DPC)? Is it health insurance?

Direct Primary Care is a membership-based approach to primary care. Instead of billing insurance, you pay a simple monthly fee that covers most of your routine primary care needs, including visits, communication, and many in-office services.

Direct Primary Care is not health insurance. It covers only the services provided within our clinic.

Is there a limit to how many times I can be seen?

No. There are no visit limits or copays. We encourage you to reach out whenever you need care.

Can I cancel anytime?

Membership is month-to-month and continues automatically. Either you or the clinic may cancel with advance notice as outlined in the membership agreement.

Do you bill insurance?

No. We do not bill insurance for visits or services provided in our clinic. This allows us to keep pricing transparent and spend more time focused on your care.

Should I still have insurance?

Absolutely. Insurance is important for unexpected events like hospital stays, surgeries, specialist care, and emergencies. Many patients pair DPC with a high-deductible or catastrophic plan.

Can I use my HSA to pay for my membership?

Yes! As of Jan 1, 2026 Direct Primary Care memberships are recognized as a qualified medical expense for Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). That means you can use your HSA funds to pay your membership fees.

That said, every plan is different, and plan administrators have final say on reimbursements. We recommend checking with your HSA administrator to confirm how your benefits apply.

Can I join if I have Medicare?

Yes. Patients with Medicare are welcome to join. However, Dr. Nguyen has “opted out” status for Medicare as required by law to provide direct primary care services. This means we do not bill Medicare. Members pay the monthly fee directly to us and Medicare does not reimburse membership costs.

You may still use your Medicare benefits for services outside our clinic, such as specialists, hospital care, labs, outside pharmacies, or imaging.

Can my whole family join?

Yes! That’s the beauty of family medicine. Families may take advantage of our family plan discount for everyone in the household.

How do I sign up?

We currently have an active waitlist for interest. A few months prior to opening, tentatively between Nov 2026 and Jan 2027, we will reach out individually to those who have expressed interest to discuss further, schedule meet and greets and assist with enrollment if a good fit.

Why should I join if I’m healthy and don't go to the doctor?

Primary Care isn’t just for when you’re sick – it’s designed to help you stay well.

Membership gives you direct access to your primary care physician (PCP) for preventive care, early evaluation of new concerns, and ongoing guidance about your health. Small issues can often be addressed quickly before they become bigger problems.

This provides peace of mind. If something unexpected comes up, you already have a PCP who knows you and can see you promptly – without worrying about appointment delays or copays.

Many times, an urgent care visit can cost the same as a month of membership and doesn’t come with any continuity or follow-up.

Many of the healthiest patients value having a trusted physician they can easily reach, even if they only need a few visits a year.

Who is Direct Primary Care not a good fit for?

Direct Primary Care works well for many individuals and families, but it is not the right fit for everyone.

The model may not be the best fit for people who prefer a traditional insurance-based clinic where every clinical interaction is billed to insurance, or who are mainly looking for the occasional walk-in visit. In addition, if you have employer-sponsored coverage that provides easy access, low copays, and minimal out-of-pocket costs, you may not need direct primary care.

Because we focus on personalized, relationship-based care, membership is best suited for patients who value easy access, longer visits, and a direct partnership with their physician. Successful partnerships require engagement on both sides.

Feel free to join the waitlist even if uncertain and we’ll be happy to discuss whether our care is right for you.

Do you manage chronic pain or prescribe long-term opioid medications?

Willow Family Medicine focuses on comprehensive primary care and preventive health. While we treat many common musculoskeletal and pain-related conditions, we do not start patients on long-term opioid management aside from suboxone. When this level of care is needed, we coordinate referrals to pain management specialists and continue supporting your overall primary care.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

Most patients can be seen same or next day. Longer appointments are available when needed, so you never feel rushed.

Can I contact you between visits?

Yes. Members have direct access via secure messaging, phone or video visits when appropriate.

How does access work outside of regular office hours?

While we offer enhanced access compared to traditional practices, Direct Primary Care is not a 24/7 emergency service. We are available during clinic hours for visits, calls, secure texts, and secure messaging.

Dr. Nguyen will triage after hours needs and assist as able.

For urgent medical emergencies, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

What if I have a question after hours?

Members may send a secure message, text message, or leave a voicemail at any time. Non-urgent after-hours concerns will be addressed next day during regular business hours.

If an urgent issue arises after hours, we will be available to provide guidance on appropriate next steps. However, true emergencies should always be directed to 911 or the emergency department.

What types of issues should go to the emergency department?

Chest pain, severe shortness of breath, stroke symptoms, significant trauma, or any life-threatening emergency should always be treated as an emergency and handled by calling 911.

What kinds of conditions do you treat?

We care for most everyday primary care needs including preventive care, acute illnesses, chronic conditions, pediatric care, women’s health, minor procedures, and more.

If it’s something typically handled by a primary care doctor, there’s a good chance we can help.

Feel free to ask, if we can help, we will.

Are labs and imaging included?

Labs and imaging are not included in the membership fee, but we offer discounted cash pricing through local partners. You may also choose to use your insurance and get the orders done at a preferred lab or imaging location.

How do prescriptions work?

If using insurance, prescriptions will be no different than a standard clinic with prescriptions sent to a preferred pharmacy.

Many common, non-controlled, medications will be available directly from our clinic at low cost. We will always work with you to find the more cost-effective way to get medications.

Do you do procedures in the office?

Yes! Dr. Nguyen performs many minor procedures conveniently in clinic. This includes, but is not limited to, skin biopsies, stitches, joint injections, cyst removals, contraceptive placement and more.

What happens if I’m traveling or out of town?

If you’re traveling, we’re still happy to help. We can often provide guidance, answer questions, and help you decide next steps by phone or message. For certain medical concerns, you may need to be seen locally depending on state regulations and the type of care needed.

What happens if Dr. Nguyen is out of town?

We believe in planning ahead, so your care is never interrupted. Patients will be notified in advance of any scheduled time away, giving you plenty of opportunity to schedule visits, refills, or address any concerns before departure. This is the benefit of having a smaller, well-known patient panel.

If an urgent issue arises while Dr. Nguyen is away, we recommend using local urgent care or emergency services as appropriate. Dr. Nguyen will resume normal availability as soon as she returns.

If able, Dr. Nguyen will try to arrange call coverage with another physician prior to time away.

Do you complete FMLA, disability, L&I care, or extensive paperwork?

We will complete routine medical forms and documentation related to care for established members. More complex or time-intensive paperwork may require additional time or, in some cases, referral to the appropriate specialist or evaluating provider.

We are not certified as a consultative examiner for social security disability evaluations.

We do not handle L&I claims.
